Contributor Spotlight: March 2021

Hi everyone! Welcome to this month’s Contributor Spotlight. Each month we highlight a different contributor from our global community! For today’s post, we interviewed Shubhom Bhattacharya, Greenstand’s lead data scientist.

Shubhom is originally from Atlanta, Georgia, USA. He attended Cornell University, where he studied computer science and electrical engineering. He discovered a love for solving problems related to machine learning and computer vision, prompting him to seek out and join Greenstand before he even graduated! Now, he is a data scientist at M Science, a data-driven investment research firm in New York.

In October 2019, Shubhom was browsing GitHub for open-source projects where he could apply his data science skills. He came across Greenstand and was impressed not only with the technological component, but our mission, as he also has a personal interest in the way organizations approach sustainability efforts. He told us that he loves the idea of increasing accountability with regard to environmental offsets, as well as the concept of turning tree planting into tree growing. Since then, he has become the data analysis team lead, spearheading new Treetracker projects and, ultimately, helping us grow our global forest.

The majority of Shubhom’s work at Greenstand has been Treetracker research and development. His responsibilities include building out new features, improving security, and performance optimization. Some of his projects have included verifying that tree captures are only credited once and that the proper metadata, such as a tree’s height, age, or species is attributed to the datapoint. This work is a continuous effort of the Greenstand team to build out a tree value matrix based on additional values and parameters that get attached to each tree capture, in order to effectively display the value of the ecosystem services a tree provides.

This allows us to assign environmental value to individual trees, which is part of the information stored in each impact token. Shubhom explained that the Treetracker platform will likely always require a human verification team, but he and his team are working on automating the process and designing it to be as “foolproof” as possible.

Shubhom told us that while the COVID-19 pandemic has largely kept him inside, he’s managed to keep up with some of his hobbies. When he isn’t working or volunteering with Greenstand, Shubhom enjoys playing basketball and soccer and is learning how to paint with watercolors. Thank you for all your hard work on the Treetracker, Shubhom!
